Imam Budijono, founder of Tenun Imam in Denpasar Bali, has a master’s degree in textiles from the Bandung Institute of Technology. For many years he has experimented with different kinds of thread in the textile industry, until he discovered that silk was the ultimate in textile experimentation. In 2009 and 2010 he participated in a silk weaving competition of ASEAN Silk fabric and Fashion Design, in Bangkok receiving appreciation and praise for his work from AHPADA. He won the competition with his new innovations and creations. Now his son, Alfian is continuing his work.

Bebali, Saudan

Saudan belongs to the Bebali category and is considered a sacred cloth in Rites of Passage. During the dangerous transition, from one stage of life into the next stage, Saudan is used to clad a baby at its three-month ritual. It is believed that the ritual is to protect the body and spirit of the baby, as well as his catur sanak, the four elements that help the baby survive in the womb (amniotic fluid, vernix caseosa, blood, and placenta). Ngurah produces sacred Bebali cloths, used in Balinese life-cycle rituals. He is one of the last remaining dyers on the island of Nusa Penida.

Songket and TIE-DYE

Ketut Sriponi is a songket weaver in Jineng Dalam, Singaraja, North Bali. The red cloth on the right is created using two techniques. One, the cloth is woven on a Balinese cag-cag backstrap loom. Using the supplementary weft technique in a variety of colors, the cloth is embellished with traditional motifs, with on both ends of the cloth, a row of bamboo-shoot motifs. Two, Empty spaces on the cloth are tied-dyed, using the resist dye technique. In the final stage the cloth is dipped in a red dye vat, and sun-dried. By removing the ties, patterns appear on the fabric where the ties blocked the dye from seeping through.

Tenganan is famous for their geringsing double ikat patterns, which is considered a bebali cloth, a textile used in sacred Balinese rituals.
